Europe reinforced its position as the world’s top leisure travel destination in 2025, capturing one-third of all global leisure travel spending, according to new WTTC Economic Impact Research data sponsored by Chase Travel. Global leisure spending reached $6.15 trillion in 2025, up 3.5% year-on-year, with Europe alone accounting for $2 trillion — roughly $1 in every $3 spent worldwide on leisure travel.
Southern Europe remains the driving force behind this growth, with France, Spain, Italy and Türkiye ranking among the world’s most sought-after summer destinations. In 2025, France’s leisure spending grew 3.6%, Spain’s 2.6%, and Italy’s 2.2%.
Looking ahead, Europe’s tourism sector is forecast to grow 3.7% in 2026, outpacing the global average of 3.1%. Italy is projected to lead this growth at 4.7%, followed by Spain (4.3%), Türkiye (4.1%) and France (2.6%).
WTTC President & CEO Gloria Guevara said Southern Europe’s strong connectivity and unique visitor experiences continue driving demand, and called for continued investment in infrastructure and sustainable tourism management to maintain the region’s global competitiveness.
