Riyadh: Kenya’s tourism sector contributed $12.7 billion to the country’s economy in 2025, accounting for 9.3% of GDP, according to the latest Economic Impact Research (EIR) data.
The sector supported 1.8 million jobs and welcomed 2.5 million international visitors during the year, a 5.6% increase compared to 2024. International visitor spending reached $5 billion, slightly higher than domestic tourism spending of $4.5 billion.
Kenya also recorded a tourism trade surplus, with international visitor spending exceeding outbound travel spending by $3.96 billion. The country continued to strengthen its sustainability efforts, with nearly 20% of tourism sector energy coming from low-carbon sources.
The report also highlighted strong tourism growth across Africa. The sector contributed $228 billion to the continent’s economy in 2025, representing 7% of regional GDP. It is expected to grow further and reach $241 billion in 2026.
Africa welcomed 99.2 million international visitors in 2025, up 14.1% from the previous year. Experts say better visa policies, stronger air connectivity, improved infrastructure, and digital travel solutions will help maintain the sector’s growth in the coming years.
